Happening Now: Protest Hits Togo Over Constitutional Reforms [VIDEO]
Massive protests have erupted across Lomé and other parts of Togo as citizens rally against controversial constitutional changes. Demonstrators accuse the government of attempting to entrench President Faure Gnassingbé’s grip on power under the guise of parliamentary restructuring. Footage from the streets shows chanting crowds and a heavy security presence.
The unrest follows recent legislative maneuvers that critics describe as a “constitutional coup.” Opposition parties and civil society groups argue that the reforms strip away direct presidential elections and could allow the current leader to remain in power indefinitely under a new title. The government, however, insists the changes are meant to modernize governance.
Security forces have been deployed in large numbers, with tear gas used to disperse crowds. Several protesters have reportedly been injured or arrested. Internet disruptions have also been reported, fueling concerns about suppression of dissent and media freedom as the demonstrations intensify.
