Some social media users, including Hindutva propaganda network shared a photo of a woman wrapped in polythene, falsely claiming she was a Hindu woman who had been raped in Bangladesh. In reality, the woman is a 23-year-old pregnant Muslim named Maria Akhtar (also referred to as Maria Begum), who alleged that she was tortured by relatives of her husband's ex-wife in an attempt to force her to terminate her pregnancy.

A reverse image search of the widely shared photo led to a Daily Samakal report published on June 29. It revealed that the woman in the image is Maria Begum (aka Maria Akhtar), a 23-year-old pregnant Muslim woman, found with her hands and feet bound and wrapped in polythene in the Talukdar Hat area of Barisal Sadar. Locals rescued her early Sunday morning by the Barisal-Bhola highway, and police admitted her to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital (SBMC).

Maria, three months pregnant, alleged that she was abducted and tortured by relatives of her husband’s ex-wife, who were trying to force her to miscarry.
Sub-Inspector Sirajul Islam confirmed her husband is Moshiur Rahman, a businessman from Bhola. Maria had been living at her father’s home in Barisal city. According to her account, she left for Bhola to visit her husband but missed the ferry. On her way back home, she was abducted at Charcaowa Zero Point and taken to a remote area where she was tortured, tied up, and wrapped in plastic.
A doctor from SBMC confirmed that no signs of sexual assault were found.
A video report from Ekattor TV corroborates these details.
