New Delhi turned into a fortress on Saturday, as a show of force by the Indian authorities met a display of defiance by the country’s youth.

Thousands of people, mostly in their 20s and 30s, tried to gather to protest a sweeping revision of India’s voter rolls that eliminated 130 million names. Security forces hauled protesters away, sometimes grabbing them by their arms and legs and forcefully stuffing them into buses and vans.

Saturday’s protest followed a week of nationwide demonstrations demanding the resignation of the head of India’s election commission and signaled growing frustration with the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has been in power for 12 years.
