"Regina Zielinski, née Feldman | Sobibor survivor, witness

1925 – 2014

Born Riwka Feldman in Siedliszcze, Poland.

Deported to Sobibor in 1942 at age 17. She was spared the gas chambers and forced to knit socks for German soldiers. Her parents, brother and sister were murdered.

She escaped during the 14 October 1943 uprising. She survived the war living under false identity papers as a Catholic Polish woman, working for a German family.

She emigrated to Australia in 1949, settled in Sydney and Adelaide, and spoke to school students for decades. She testified at the Sobibor war crimes trial.

She was awarded Poland’s Knight’s Cross of the Order of Merit in 2014, shortly before her death.

We remember Regina Zielinski. Australia’s only Sobibor survivor, who turned memory into education.
