Sri Pada, also known as Adam’s Peak (2243 m), one of the highest summits of Sri Lanka, is revered as a holy site by Buddhists, Hindus, and some Muslims and Christians.
The hollow in the lofty rock that crowns the summit is said by the Brahmans to be the footstep of Siva, by the Buddhists of Buddha, by the Muslims of Adam, whilst the Christians of St Thomas. A shrine was built there, attracting thousands of pilgrims every year, who have to climb about 6000 steps.
The Buddhist legend says that Buddha left his footprint as a symbol for worship at the invitation of the god Saman during his third visit to Sri Lanka.
